• Allied Arts Announces 2011 Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute Graduates

    Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga welcomed the 7th graduation class of the Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute on Tuesday, November 29, 2011. The 24 graduates join 180 past participants of the institute which is designed to develop arts volunteers and board members for local arts organizations.

    Launched in 2005 in memory of long-time board member and arts advocate A. William Holmberg, Jr., the institute offers behind-the-scenes site visits to cultural and educational institutions, case studies of arts agencies, panel discussions with community leaders, and a unique forum for pursuing shared goals among arts leaders, business leaders, educators, and philanthropic foundations.

    “This year’s class had many unique, insider experiences within the arts and culture of our community,” said Marilyn J. Harrison, Vice President of Allied Arts.

    The 8 session institute included an introduction to Allied Arts and our arts community, arts advocacy, arts education, public art, accessibility and board development. Keynote speakers included Ruth Holmberg, community leader; Senator Andy Berke; Chattanooga Councilperson Pam Ladd; Pete Cooper, CEO, Community Foundation; Marc Goldring with Wolf/Brown Consultants; Melanie Layne, Kennedy Center Workshop Leader; Ellen Hays, Chair of the Tennessee Arts Commission; Jim Hill, community leader; Alison Lebovitz, President, One Clip at a Time; Ann Coulter with A. Coulter Consulting; Jason Taylor, President, Chattanooga Times Free Press; Sarah Morgan and Karen “Rudy” Rudolph, The Lyndhurst Foundation; and Brother Ron Fender with the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.

    Visits were made to Bessie Smith Cultural Center, the Chattanooga Theatre Centre, Chattanooga Ballet, Creative Discovery Museum, the Hunter Museum of American Art, The H*Art Gallery, Signal Centers, Normal Park Museum Magnet and Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts.

    In addition to the class sessions, Institute members developed projects to support the arts in our community. Projects included new marketing ventures and development of new arts venues.

    “Every year we are delighted by the creative, innovative ideas that the members of the Holmberg arts leadership class come up with. This year is no exception,” stated Maury Nicely, Chair of the Holmberg Institute. “I look forward to seeing how these great new ideas can be implemented here in Chattanooga in the months to come!”

    Participation in the Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute is open to residents of the greater Chattanooga area who have demonstrated passionate support and advocacy for the arts and who have made a commitment to making a difference in the quality of life in the community.
