The community is invited to join Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga (ETC) for James Lapine and William Finn’s exciting “FALSETTOS” January 27 – February 12; Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. Performances will take place in the St. Andrews Center, 1918 Union Avenue.
"FALSETTOS is a musical about one man's self discovery in a world of traditions, expectations and desires. It's about his relationships and the impact those relationships have on him,” says director Garry Lee Posey. “There is right and there is wrong, but each person manipulates them slightly. We observe the rules but skew them to make sense of our feelings. In the end, how we reflect on our past is how we checkmate life's curve balls."
“For me, what separates this musical from the rest is the intensity of the music,” says music director John Thomas Cecil. “The music is sincere, not forced. I believe it reinforces that singing is an extension of speech. It continually takes me by surprise and gives me chills.”
The directors aren’t the only ones brimming with enthusiasm; it’s a sentiment shared by the cast as well. “This rehearsal process has been wonderful,” says actor Jeff Parker. “This show is strange and whimsical, dealing with the incredibly straightforward issues of time, love and family. It is 'real-life' beautiful: not the glamorized, air-brushed and edited beauty, but the kind of flawed beauty we encounter in our day to day lives. It possesses an inner beauty just as all of us do.”
Tickets are $15 and are available at www.ensembletheatreofchattanooga.com, by calling 423-987-5141 and at the box office. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance. Free parking is available behind the St. Andrews Center. -

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
Description: Dashing men-about-town John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff pursue fair ladies Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew in this comedy classic. In-Town Gallery presents “Conversations”, a new series of oil paintings by Janis Wilkey, the featured artist for February 2012. The figure paintings are a tribute to a time and place expressed through her personal connections with the subjects. Come and meet the artist at the opening reception on the first Friday, February 3, from 5 pm to 8 pm in the gallery.
Wilkey’s new body of work explores people in ordinary situations having everyday conversations. She strives to capture the images with economy and freshness in dynamic, strong compositions. She is a lifelong resident of Southeast Tennessee, and the subjects in the paintings are part of the culture she has experienced here, but this type of interaction between people is a universal experience we all share regardless of our location. “These images speak to our common humanity. Aside from their dress, they could be living in any part of the world”, the artist explains.
Studying painting and drawing at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, Wilkey has also studied with local artist Daud Akhriev, among others. She paints murals, portraits, and other commissioned pieces as well as studio and plein air work.
In-Town Gallery is located at 26A Frazier Avenue, between the Market Street and Walnut Street bridges, adjacent to Coolidge Park on the trendy ‘Hip to Historical’ North Shore of the Tennessee River. Founded in 1974, it is one of the oldest cooperative galleries in the nation, and presents the original work of more than 30 regional studio artists. It is open seven days a week year-round: 11 am to 6 pm Monday - Saturday, 1-5 pm Sunday, and until 8 pm on most First Fridays. Painter Ed Cook specializes in the art of miniature painting. Mr. Cook's love of nature can be seen in his small-scale acrylic renditions of old buildings, barns, and landscapes.
Finding inspiration on every street corner, painter Joe Parrott is captivated by the interplay of light and shadow. Using thick brush strokes and attention to line and form, Mr. Parrot captures the energy of everyday life.

February 4, 2012
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Museum Atrium and Arts Studio
Grab your camera and some binoculars! We are going on a Camera Safari for Preschool Adventure Day. On February 4 from 10 a.m. to Noon, you and your preschooler will have the opportunity to learn about Jungle and Savannah animals. Multi-sensory activities will bring smiles to your little one as they paint with rubber snakes and create a vegetable jungle to eat.
The Chattanooga Zoo will also bring the safari to life when they bring some of their own small animals to the event. And don't worry about danger during this safari. We only shoot pictures! Parents are encouraged to bring cameras to this event to capture their children's delight and wonder while on safari.
Preschool Adventure Day is targeted toward children 18 months to 4 years old. By using art, literature, music and movement, Preschool Adventure Day enhances learning and development for preschoolers and is held at the Museum multiple times a year with a different theme each event.

Matt Flinner Trio
SAT, Feb 4 @ 8 pm
$12 adv/$15 door
Multi-instrumentalist Matt Flinner has made a career out of playing acoustic music in new ways. Starting out as a banjo prodigy who was playing bluegrass festivals before he entered his teens, Flinner later took up the mandolin, won the banjo contest at Winfield Kansas in 1990, and took the mandolin award there the following year.
Flinner is now widely considered one of the hottest mandolin players on the acoustic scene. Although he lives in Nashville these days, Flinner believes that his early years spent in the Rocky Mountains had a very real impact on his music. "There’s an American harmony in classical music that’s this big wide-open sound -- Aaron Copeland’s work, for example," Flinner says. "So I think there could be something to that, that your surroundings reflect your music." With his singular combination of taste, tone and time, Flinner has created a sound that is unique to his vision and makes an important statement in the evolution of acoustic string band music.
