CHATTANOOGA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM HOSTS SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT
The rising cost of fuel has forced many families to reconsider their travel plans this summer. Due to these limitations, the Chattanooga African American Museum has decided to bring a piece of Washington D.C. to the Scenic City by hosting the Smithsonian travel exhibit, The Dancer Within, from June 23 through August 15.
The Dancer Within, a photographic display by nationally acclaimed photo-journalist, Rose Eichenbaum, captures the character and vitality of nearly fifty of the world’s greatest dancers including The American Ballerina, Cynthia Gregory; Tony Award winner and acclaimed actor and singer, Ben Vereen; the Spanish Dance Legend, Jose’ Greco; and the Goddess of Broadway, Chita Rivera. The Dancer Within Tour began in Ypsilanti, Michigan in April 2008 and Chattanooga is the second stop for the 10-city tour.
“We realize that the state of our economy is hindering many families from traveling long distances this summer and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to host the Smithsonian Institution’s The Dancer Within,”
said Rose Martin, Executive Director of the Chattanooga African American Museum. “Area families will be able to enjoy this renown Smithsonian exhibit right here in their backyard through August 15. We feel the museum is definitely a great alternative to the Smithsonian as it is family-friendly and budget-friendly as well.”
The Dancer Within is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and generously supported by United Dancer Merchants of America. Additional support has been provided by The Enchanted Garden Conservatory of Music, Dance & Drama.
Visitors can tour The Dancer Within as well as other stimulating exhibits at the Chattanooga African American Museum Monday through Friday between 10 a.m.
and 5 p.m. or on Saturdays from Noon to 4 pm. General admission is $5, $3 for senior citizens and students and $2 for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and under
are free. To obtain additional information about the
Smithsonian traveling exhibit or to inquire about other exhibits, please call (423) 266-8658 or visit www.caamhistory.com.

The Jewish Community Federation of Greater Chattanooga presents, 'Think Globally, Draw Locally', a collection of editorial cartoons by Clay Bennett, the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for the Chattanooga Times Free Press, August 4 through September 4, 2008. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to a view of our world, country, state and city, through the eyes and pen of one of America's premier editorial cartoonists.
A luncheon and meet-the-artist opportunity will take place on Tuesday, August 19 at noon when Bennett will speak about his editorial cartoons. The cost for the luncheon is $6.00. Reservations can be made by calling Ann Treadwell at (423) 493-0270 ext. 13 by August 13.
Bennett has received almost every honor his profession has to offer including The Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning (2002), the Sigma Delta Chi Award (2001), the National Journalism Award (2002), the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award (2007), the John Fischetti Award (2001, 2005), the Overseas Press Club Award (2005, 2000) and the National Headliner Award (1999, 2000, 2004).
A 1980 graduate from the University of North Alabama, Bennett reflects, "My career has taken a long and sometimes bumpy road, but I'm very pleased with where it's led me. After almost 30 years and 5 newspapers, I've finally returned to the Tennessee River, so it was well worth the journey". Bennett, who's served stints with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Fayetteville (NC) Times, the St. Petersburg Times and The Christian Science Monitor, now draws for the Chattanooga Times Free Press, where his cartoons appear 5 times a week.
The exhibit is free and open to the public from August 4 through September 4 at the Jewish Cultural Center, located at 5461 North Terrace Road in Chattanooga. While his music has remained hardcore country, he has pushed the boundaries of the music quite far. Like his idol Bob Wills, his music is a melting pot that draws from all forms of traditional American music. As a performer, singer, and musician, he is one of the best, influencing countless other artists. Throughout his career, Haggard has been a champion of the working man, largely due to his rough and tumble history. All seats are reserved at $35 and $45, plus convenience fees.

The Riverfront is at the core of Chattanooga’s history, and it is the one place in our community from which sites related to the first settlers, the Cherokees, the Civil War, reconstruction, industrialization, and the renaissance can be visually referenced. Take a short walk, approximately 6 blocks, with our guide, and get an overview of the fascinating history of this place.
