The Chattanooga Music Club will present Robert S. MacDonald in a patriotic organ concert Tuesday, July 1, at 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium. The program will be the second of an annual patriotic 4th of July musical celebration, featuring the restored 1924 Austin pipe organ in the auditorium. The program will include patriotic selections, recognition of members of the Armed Forces, audience participation, and organ accompaniment by Mr. MacDonald to a Laurel and Hardy patriotic silent movie. Members and veterans of the Armed Forces and their families are especially invited to attend.

Admiral Vance H. Fry of the CMC will serve as master of ceremonies, and Ron Littlefield, Mayor of Chattanooga, will have the welcome and lead in a special tribute to deceased members of the Armed Forces. The program is open to the public without charge.

Robert MacDonald, a native of Massachusetts now living in Fort Worth, Texas, has presented concerts throughout the U.S., playing programs in City Hall, Portland, Maine; Washington National Cathedral; Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C.; Crystal Cathedral, Garden Grove, California; Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Aspen Music Festival; several churches in New York City; and with The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He has played aboard the M.S. Gripsholm, flagship of the Swedish American Line, on extended cruises between New York City and many ports in Europe.

During his career, Mr. MacDonald has served in a number of notable positions: Associate Organist/Choir Director of The Riverside Church in New York City; Director of Music and Organist at The Interchurch Center, New York; Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey; staff organist at Radio City Music Hall for eight years; appointed organist at First Presbyterian CHurch in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1989.

Mr. MacDonald earned the Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ Performance at Boston University and holds the Master of Music Degree in Organ Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. His varied musical interests have taken him to a number of musical sights--as a concert artist, church organist, choir director, teacher of piano and organ, public school vocal music teacher, director of music for little theater productions, supper club entertainer, director of community choruses, clinician for handbell workshops and master classes for organists and teacher of service playing. He has also been guest clinician/organist at music conferences for the Southern Baptist Music Week, the American Baptist Church Musicians, and the Presbyterian Music Week in Texas.

A lifelong member of the American Guild of Organists, he holds the Associate degree of that organization and is a former Dean of their New York Chapter. A number of his writings and music arrangements have been published.

The Chattanooga Downtown Partnership will present entertainment at Ross’s Landing Plaza, the area surrounding the Tennessee Aquarium, throughout this holiday weekend. Paul Vogler will perform this Thursday, July 3rd from 11 AM until 2 PM. Friday, July 4th, and Saturday, July 5th, will feature Mawuko from 10 AM to 2 PM. Then on Saturday from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM, there will be a live performance by the Hill City String Band. Mawuko will return on Sunday, July 6th, from 11 AM to 3 PM. Celebrate Independence Day on Thursday, July 3rd, with a patriotic concert at Coolidge Park produced by the Chattanooga Downtown Partnership and featuring the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera (CSO).

Pops on the River, an outdoor musical concert, will be held from 8:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., concluding with a patriotic fireworks finale over the Tennessee River. It is presented FREE to the public by sponsoring organizations Regions Bank and Chattanooga Times Free Press, along with co-sponsor Allied Arts.

The CSO, directed by Robert Bernhardt, will present a program featuring patriotic pieces from Sousa, Tchaikovsky and Anderson, as well as a vocal set including songs from Porgy & Bess, Carousel and South Pacific. Local favorites the Dismembered Tennesseans will also perform a 15-minutes set during the show.

The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a picnic during this concert and fireworks display. Food, beer and non-alcoholic drink concessions will be available on site. A rain date for the concert is scheduled for Sunday, July 6th.

Coolidge Park will be closing to vehicular traffic at 4:30 PM on the day of the show. Attendees are encouraged to park in UNUM parking lots between 4th and 5th Streets at no charge, where, beginning at 6 PM, busses will transport passengers across the river, unloading near the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. Busses will pick up at the intersection of Tremont and River Streets to return attendees to the UNUM parking lots until 11 PM.

Attendees may also park on the south shore of the river and walk across the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge to the performance in Coolidge Park. However, no one will be allowed to set up chairs, or remain on the Walnut Street Bridge during the show, as it will be closed beginning at 8:15 PM in preparation for the fireworks display.

CHATTANOOGA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM HOSTS SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

The rising cost of fuel has forced many families to reconsider their travel plans this summer. Due to these limitations, the Chattanooga African American Museum has decided to bring a piece of Washington D.C. to the Scenic City by hosting the Smithsonian travel exhibit, The Dancer Within, from June 23 through August 15.

The Dancer Within, a photographic display by nationally acclaimed photo-journalist, Rose Eichenbaum, captures the character and vitality of nearly fifty of the world’s greatest dancers including The American Ballerina, Cynthia Gregory; Tony Award winner and acclaimed actor and singer, Ben Vereen; the Spanish Dance Legend, Jose’ Greco; and the Goddess of Broadway, Chita Rivera. The Dancer Within Tour began in Ypsilanti, Michigan in April 2008 and Chattanooga is the second stop for the 10-city tour.

“We realize that the state of our economy is hindering many families from traveling long distances this summer and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to host the Smithsonian Institution’s The Dancer Within,”
said Rose Martin, Executive Director of the Chattanooga African American Museum. “Area families will be able to enjoy this renown Smithsonian exhibit right here in their backyard through August 15. We feel the museum is definitely a great alternative to the Smithsonian as it is family-friendly and budget-friendly as well.”

The Dancer Within is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and generously supported by United Dancer Merchants of America. Additional support has been provided by The Enchanted Garden Conservatory of Music, Dance & Drama.

Visitors can tour The Dancer Within as well as other stimulating exhibits at the Chattanooga African American Museum Monday through Friday between 10 a.m.

If you are a hopeful writer and would like to learn about literary agencies and the process of marketing your book, this meeting is for you. Join us at this meeting of the Chattanooga Writers Guild for a look inside the world of publishing. The speakers include Stephanie Dennis, President of The Authors' Literary Agency and Lantz Powell of the Literary Agency for Southern Writers. This meeting is free and open to the public.

Stephanne Dennis, formerly served as an affiliate with an Atlanta-based agency where she learned the art and science of the industry and built a substantial network with publishing houses. In mid-2007 Stephanne forged a path on her own, founding The Authors' Literary Agency, Inc. in Chattanooga, TN.

Stephanne sold her first book within 2 months and a film option shortly thereafter. In the past year the agency has grown substantially. Though she has a personal passion for fiction, her agency tends to specialize in non-fiction. Currently Stephanne's book sales range from memoirs to pop culture to hard science. Today, the agency has clients throughout the South. It has grown purely by word of mouth -- Lantz refuses to have even a website, despite the fact that most of his communication with clients is done via the Internet.

Lantz recently contributed to "Masters of Sales," compiled and edited by Ivan Risner and Don Morgan. It was the #1 Business Book on the New York Times list and numerous other lists such as BusinessWeek's and Amazon.com.

Bill Haymes is a contemporary singer/songwriter. He has played in 37 North American states, toured twice in South America, been a featured guest on two nationally syndicated radio broadcasts: "Prairie Home Companion," and Tom May's "River City Folk". His fifth full-length recording, "Brave New World," was produced by award-winning engineer/producer Bil VornDick, and released in 1998. In addition to touring and performing for grown-up audiences, Mr. Haymes has been working with schools in Arkansas and Tennessee through the Arts in Education since 1977.

CHATTANOOGA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM HOSTS SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

The rising cost of fuel has forced many families to reconsider their travel plans this summer. Due to these limitations, the Chattanooga African American Museum has decided to bring a piece of Washington D.C. to the Scenic City by hosting the Smithsonian travel exhibit, The Dancer Within, from June 23 through August 15.

The Dancer Within, a photographic display by nationally acclaimed photo-journalist, Rose Eichenbaum, captures the character and vitality of nearly fifty of the world’s greatest dancers including The American Ballerina, Cynthia Gregory; Tony Award winner and acclaimed actor and singer, Ben Vereen; the Spanish Dance Legend, Jose’ Greco; and the Goddess of Broadway, Chita Rivera. The Dancer Within Tour began in Ypsilanti, Michigan in April 2008 and Chattanooga is the second stop for the 10-city tour.

“We realize that the state of our economy is hindering many families from traveling long distances this summer and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to host the Smithsonian Institution’s The Dancer Within,”
said Rose Martin, Executive Director of the Chattanooga African American Museum. “Area families will be able to enjoy this renown Smithsonian exhibit right here in their backyard through August 15. We feel the museum is definitely a great alternative to the Smithsonian as it is family-friendly and budget-friendly as well.”

The Dancer Within is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and generously supported by United Dancer Merchants of America. Additional support has been provided by The Enchanted Garden Conservatory of Music, Dance & Drama.

Visitors can tour The Dancer Within as well as other stimulating exhibits at the Chattanooga African American Museum Monday through Friday between 10 a.m.

The Chattanooga History Center will present, in cooperation with the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, The Chickamauga Challenge Course for youngsters aged 12-16, from 9:00am-3:00pm, July14-15. Participants will explore the Chickamauga Battlefield, learning about the life of Civil War soldiers: how they cooked and ate, how they trained, how they drilled, and how where on this battlefield they fought.

CHATTANOOGA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM HOSTS SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

The rising cost of fuel has forced many families to reconsider their travel plans this summer. Due to these limitations, the Chattanooga African American Museum has decided to bring a piece of Washington D.C. to the Scenic City by hosting the Smithsonian travel exhibit, The Dancer Within, from June 23 through August 15.

The Dancer Within, a photographic display by nationally acclaimed photo-journalist, Rose Eichenbaum, captures the character and vitality of nearly fifty of the world’s greatest dancers including The American Ballerina, Cynthia Gregory; Tony Award winner and acclaimed actor and singer, Ben Vereen; the Spanish Dance Legend, Jose’ Greco; and the Goddess of Broadway, Chita Rivera. The Dancer Within Tour began in Ypsilanti, Michigan in April 2008 and Chattanooga is the second stop for the 10-city tour.

“We realize that the state of our economy is hindering many families from traveling long distances this summer and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to host the Smithsonian Institution’s The Dancer Within,”
said Rose Martin, Executive Director of the Chattanooga African American Museum. “Area families will be able to enjoy this renown Smithsonian exhibit right here in their backyard through August 15. We feel the museum is definitely a great alternative to the Smithsonian as it is family-friendly and budget-friendly as well.”

The Dancer Within is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and generously supported by United Dancer Merchants of America. Additional support has been provided by The Enchanted Garden Conservatory of Music, Dance & Drama.

Beekeepers visit the hive to extract honey at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day
The 10th annual Honey Harvest is a museum-wide celebration for some of the world’s hardest workers: the Honey Bee. Guests will learn about the art of beekeeping, the life of a bee and how honey is made. You will be able to observe beekeepers working in the hive, see how honey is extracted from the comb and taste different honeys from around the world. In the atrium guests will learn about the many uses of honey, beeswax, and pollen. You can roll your own beeswax candle, create honey lip balm, make honey soap, and sample herbs related to the bees.

To celebrate the art of fashion and to showcase the designs of a renowned designer and Chattanooga native, the Chattanooga African American Museum is hosting Design of a Decade: The House That Reco Built . The exhibit will include sketches, photographs, and clothing designed by Chattanooga’s Reco Chapple, owner of House of Chapple located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Design of a Decade: The House That Reco Built will open with a fashion show on Sunday, July 27 at the Chattanooga African American Museum. Acclaimed Ebony Fashion Fair models will showcase Chapple’s clothing line. The 10th annual Honey Harvest is a museum-wide celebration for some of the world’s hardest workers: the Honey Bee. Guests will learn about the art of beekeeping, the life of a bee and how honey is made. You will be able to observe beekeepers working in the hive, see how honey is extracted from the comb and taste different honeys from around the world. In the atrium guests will learn about the many uses of honey, beeswax, and pollen. You can roll your own beeswax candle, create honey lip balm, make honey soap, and sample herbs related to the bees.

CHATTANOOGA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM HOSTS SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

The rising cost of fuel has forced many families to reconsider their travel plans this summer. Due to these limitations, the Chattanooga African American Museum has decided to bring a piece of Washington D.C. to the Scenic City by hosting the Smithsonian travel exhibit, The Dancer Within, from June 23 through August 15.

The Dancer Within, a photographic display by nationally acclaimed photo-journalist, Rose Eichenbaum, captures the character and vitality of nearly fifty of the world’s greatest dancers including The American Ballerina, Cynthia Gregory; Tony Award winner and acclaimed actor and singer, Ben Vereen; the Spanish Dance Legend, Jose’ Greco; and the Goddess of Broadway, Chita Rivera. The Dancer Within Tour began in Ypsilanti, Michigan in April 2008 and Chattanooga is the second stop for the 10-city tour.

“We realize that the state of our economy is hindering many families from traveling long distances this summer and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to host the Smithsonian Institution’s The Dancer Within,”
said Rose Martin, Executive Director of the Chattanooga African American Museum. “Area families will be able to enjoy this renown Smithsonian exhibit right here in their backyard through August 15. We feel the museum is definitely a great alternative to the Smithsonian as it is family-friendly and budget-friendly as well.”

The Dancer Within is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and generously supported by United Dancer Merchants of America. Additional support has been provided by The Enchanted Garden Conservatory of Music, Dance & Drama.

Workshop slots are limited and registration will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Two hundred and two youngsters participated in the Southeastern Tennessee Regional History Day Competition, hosted by the Chattanooga History Center, in 2008, with seven regional entries going on to take prizes at the state competition, and one entry taking a prize in the national contest. The History Center takes great pride in these achievements, and is offering this workshop to help young people develop and refine the skills needed for execution of history projects for competition in the National History Day series. The workshop is open to youngsters in the Southeast Tennessee Region, which includes the following counties: Hamilton, Bradley, Polk, Marion, Grundy, Franklin, and Sequatchie. The first day of the workshop will cover selection of a category and a topic. The second will cover development of the project, and, at the third, participants will have the opportunity to present and to learn about the judging process. Participants will be creating projects, and will be responsible for obtaining their own supplies. The instructor will be History Center Curator, Dr. Daryl Black, assisted by past History Day winners.
