The Rhythm & Noon Concert Series continues this week with a FREE performance by singer / songwriter Jeff Miller on the Blue Cross Stage at Miller Plaza from Noon to 1 PM.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Jeff Miller studied Guitar Performance and Songwriting at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and currently lives in Nashville. He has released three solo albums and plays over 150 shows a year. Currently performing as a solo artist, Miller uses a device during his live shows to record and loop guitar and vocal parts, creating more sound than many bands do. Using his voice, guitar, hands and feet, he is able to act as each member of a regular band – a singer, guitarist, bassist, and a drummer.

The Kodály Institute at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will be held June 9-27. Levels One, Two and Three are offered.

Zoltan Kodály (1882-1967) was a Hungarian composer, musicologist and educator whose philosophy and writings are the basis for the Kodály approach to music education. Kodály Levels I, II and III provide an in-depth study of this approach. These courses are designed to strengthen the teacher’s musicianship while providing songs, techniques, materials, and activities to use in the classroom. Each day will feature classes in solfege, methodology, folk song collection and analysis, conducting and choral ensemble. Special topics sessions will focus on singing games, middle school techniques, folk dance, children’s choral music and videotapes of presentations by master teachers. Each day begins at 8:45 and concludes by 4:30 p.m.

Participants who have completed a Level I course at an approved institution may enroll in Level II. Level II graduates are eligible for participation in the Level III course.

"From the Trunk to the Printed Page"

Susan Gilbert Harvey will discuss her book Tea with Sister Anna: a Paris journal in an informal program called, "From the Trunk to the Printed Page." Harvey will tell how she turned a cache of family memorabilia into an award winning book about her great-aunt's life in Paris.

Susan Gilbert Harvey was a 1958 Chattanooga Cotton Belle. After studying design at Shorter College with Virginia Dudley of the Rising Fawn art community, Harvey took off her debutante white gloves and become the mighty Junk Woman, a visual artist who created sculpture from objects found in scrap yards. Junk Woman morphed into the introspective Monk Woman, who wrote poetry and explored dreams. Monk Woman emerged from her chrysalis to become The Lunatic Moth. The Lunatic Moth flapped her hot pink wings on top of the Empire State Building. She also appeared on the Clock Tower in Rome, Georgia, as part of "Standing Ovation," the annual spring equinox egg balance started by Harvey in 1985.

Harvey's sculpture, performance pieces, and narrative visuals have been presented in national venues, including Barking Legs Theater in Chattanooga.

In the 1990s, Harvey inherited the letters and Paris journal of her grandmother's sister, Anna McNulty Lester (1862-1900). Lester's courage as a nineteenth-century Georgia artist inspired Harvey to go to Paris in 1998 in a centennial retracing of Sister Anna's steps.

Golden Apple Press published Tea with Sister Anna: a Paris journal in 2005.

Harvey led a walking tour of Anna Lester's Montparnasse neighborhood as part of the Hollins Abroad-Paris 50th anniversary in 2005. She received a Georgia Author of the Year Award from the Georgia Writers Association in 2006. In 2007, the Rome Area Council for the Arts presented Harvey with its Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award.

Chattanooga State Presents Second Annual National Invitational Exhibit

The public is invited to view nine new sculpture installations at Chattanooga State’s Outdoor Museum of Art beginning May 19 and continuing through June 15. Admission is free.

Artists and their works in this temporary exhibit are John Henry’s Zig Zag; Mark DeSuvero’s Swizzle; James Davis’ This Is Something We Had To Go Through; Adam Garey’s Untitled; Hank Lautz’s three-part ensemble Scott’s Bluff, Chimney Rock, and Independence Rock; Andy Light’s Arise; and Mark Shumake’s Chartres. The director of the Museum and curator for the Invitational Exhibit is Chattanooga resident and internationally acclaimed sculptor John Henry. Joe Helseth, sculptor and professor of art at Chattanooga State, is the faculty liaison.

Chattanooga State’s permanent sculpture collection comprises nearly 40 pieces situated both indoors and outdoors throughout the campus, featuring works of regional, national, and international artists. The Outdoor Museum of Art consists of seven galleries. It functions as a community asset as well as a resource for the College’s programs of study in sheet metal, painting, welding, machine tool technology, engineering, computer-aided design, metallurgy, and art.

The North River Civic Center in Hixson announces the opening of the Artist Exhibition Program featuring local artists Mary B. Lynch and Mary B. Carrithers. This exhibition is entitled “Mary B. Mary.”

An opening reception sponsored by the Friends of the North River Civic Center will be held at the civic center, June 15, 2pm-4pm.

Mary Britten Lynch has been featured in numerous art publications, most recently in “The Best of Drawing Series”…Strokes of Genius”. She has received both national and international awards for insightful approach to painting. Her work is represented in several galleries including the cities of Alexandria, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Phoenix and is part of many corporate and private collections including the Smithsonian Archives and the U.S. Art Embassy Program.

Speaking of her work she says, “My work is me. Everything I am and everything I am not. It is my weakness, my strength, my self-esteem. My past and my future…where I am going and where I have been.” Included in her work on display is part of her “Off the Mark” collection which embodies attached acrylic canvasses which reflect the energy of internal dialogues with eclectic observances. Ms. Lynch is a Fine Arts graduate of U.T. Chattanooga and has done graduate work at Long Island University and U.T. Knoxville.

Mary Baker Carrithers, like Ms. Lynch, has exhibited her art both nationally and internationally on numerous occasions. She is also a published children’s book illustrator. Locally, Ms. Carrithers has taught art at the McCallie School where she was Chair of the Art Department for twelve year and currently teaches advanced art classes at Girl’s Preparatory School. She holds a Master’s Degree from the City University of New York, a B.A. from Bennington College and a Certificate in Drawing from Academia di Belle Arti, Florence, Italy. She also has received additional training from the Pratt Institute, Penland School, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Her work on display at the civic center is a series of eight large acrylic studio studies. In these works, we are presented with an insightful and unusual view of the everyday objects that one would see in an artist’s studio: the sink, an easel, various props and details of an artist at work.

The paintings of both artists are refreshing and will cause the viewer to linger in front of them to absorb the visual intricacies and meaning contained in the work itself. They both show a high degree of professional talent and visual sensitivity.
This is a show that is worth going out of your way to see. It will be on display at North River Civic Center May thru August.

She has appeared on the Walt Disney stage every Christmas and was featured in Disney's Teacherrific Awards, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Parade, and ABC's Countdown to Millennium. No stranger to Rhea County, She graduated from Bryan College in 2007 with a BS in Musical Theatre.

Alaska Reece Vance has directed 17 plays in the Tri-Cities, Tennessee area, including You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Steel Magnolias, Beauty and the Beast, A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Christmas Carol, The Diary of Anne Frank and A Little Princess. She has appeared in several short films including Black Widows Anonymous, A Shoe Story, The Break-Up and The Case of the Missing Bunny, among others.

Chad Rasor graduated summa cum laude from Geneva College last May, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, and has been working in the theatre for over 10 years.

Nathan Rogers holds an Associate of Arts in Theatre from Northeast State Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Business from King College, and is currently working on his Master's in Business at King College. Theatre credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Little Princess, The Glass Menagerie, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Tempest.

The concert repertoire this year features Benjamin Britten’s “Festival Te Deum” and Edward Elgar’s “Te Deum”, Op. 34, No. 1. The concert will also feature a set of sacred part songs that treat their respective texts in a more mystical fashion including Brahms “Geistliches Lied”, Op. 30, and “Lass Dich Nur Nichts Nicht Dauren,” Olivier Messiaen’s setting of “O sacrum convivium!”, “Diffusa est gratia” by Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miškinis and “O Magnum Mysterium” by American composer Ned Rorem. The concert will conclude with shorter works by Randall Stroope, Normon Luboff and pieces from South Africa and the Caribbean.

The Master Chorale was formed in 2004 to provide a summer performing ensemble for graduate and undergraduate students and community singers. Additionally the group provides a workshop chorus for graduate conducting students. The group meets each summer for a six-week rehearsal run culminating in a public concert working toward the goal of singing an advanced repertoire for concert chorus.

Tennessee Valley Theatre will present the Drifting Company’s production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest on Thursday and Friday, June 19 & 20, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. Katie Fridsma is thrilled to be returning to the Tennessee Valley Theatre after playing Aldonza in TVT's Man of La Mancha two summers ago. She has appeared on the Walt Disney stage every Christmas and was featured in Disney's Teacherrific Awards, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Parade, and ABC's Countdown to Millennium. No stranger to Rhea County, She graduated from Bryan College in 2007 with a BS in Musical Theatre.

Alaska Reece Vance has directed 17 plays in the Tri-Cities, Tennessee area, including You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Steel Magnolias, Beauty and the Beast, A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Christmas Carol, The Diary of Anne Frank and A Little Princess. She has appeared in several short films including Black Widows Anonymous, A Shoe Story, The Break-Up and The Case of the Missing Bunny, among others.

Chad Rasor graduated summa cum laude from Geneva College last May, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, and has been working in the theatre for over 10 years.

Nathan Rogers holds an Associate of Arts in Theatre from Northeast State Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Business from King College, and is currently working on his Master's in Business at King College. Theatre credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Little Princess, The Glass Menagerie, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Tempest.

Island Steel Pan Band Brings Caribbean Music To Creative Discovery Museum, June 21

The music of the Caribbean islands will be in the air at Creative Discovery Museum June 21, as the Island Steel Pan Band performs using traditional instruments from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Performances are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Museum Atrium.

"We play a lot of contemporary and gospel music with a Caribbean flavor, as well as traditional songs from the Caribbean," said Randy Peterson, leader of the band, which has played several times at Riverbend.

The unique sound of a steel pan band comes from the way the instruments are made, said Peterson. All the instruments were originally 55 gallon steel drums. They were converted into instruments by cutting off the bottom of the drums and tuning the playing surface so that it can play a variety of musical notes.

"One drum has a full range of notes, and each one has a different voice, like an orchestra. You can hear the distinct voices when we play," said Peterson.

Island Steel Pan Band performs with a collection of 16 former drums that are played by six people. Most band members are family, including Peterson and his two sons, as well as Peterson's brother and his son. A family friend also joins the band, playing a traditional drum set.

CHATTANOOGA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM HOSTS SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

The rising cost of fuel has forced many families to reconsider their travel plans this summer. Due to these limitations, the Chattanooga African American Museum has decided to bring a piece of Washington D.C. to the Scenic City by hosting the Smithsonian travel exhibit, The Dancer Within, from June 23 through August 15.

The Dancer Within, a photographic display by nationally acclaimed photo-journalist, Rose Eichenbaum, captures the character and vitality of nearly fifty of the world’s greatest dancers including The American Ballerina, Cynthia Gregory; Tony Award winner and acclaimed actor and singer, Ben Vereen; the Spanish Dance Legend, Jose’ Greco; and the Goddess of Broadway, Chita Rivera. The Dancer Within Tour began in Ypsilanti, Michigan in April 2008 and Chattanooga is the second stop for the 10-city tour.

“We realize that the state of our economy is hindering many families from traveling long distances this summer and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to host the Smithsonian Institution’s The Dancer Within,”
said Rose Martin, Executive Director of the Chattanooga African American Museum. “Area families will be able to enjoy this renown Smithsonian exhibit right here in their backyard through August 15. We feel the museum is definitely a great alternative to the Smithsonian as it is family-friendly and budget-friendly as well.”

The Dancer Within is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and generously supported by United Dancer Merchants of America. Additional support has been provided by The Enchanted Garden Conservatory of Music, Dance & Drama.

Children can learn how to create their own cartoon characters at workshops at Creative Discovery Museum led by freelance cartoonist and teaching artist. Tim Oliphant, known as Mr. Ollie, has been a professional cartoonist since 1983, producing caricatures, daily comic strips, self-syndicated editorial cartoons and freelance humorous illustrations.

"I'll be showing the basics of how to create characters," said Oliphant. "I don't draw famous characters. I show children how to create a character of their own using basic shapes like circles and squares."

Tim Oliphant will lead three cartooning workshops every day, June 24-26. Workshop times for each day will be 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Each workshop will last 40-50 minutes. Advance registration is not required. Workshops are open to twenty children per session and will fill on a first come, first serve basis. Workshops are open to all Museum guests and are free with Museum paid admission.

The Chattanooga History Center will offer a series, A Short History of Chattanooga, at 7:00pm on Tuesdays, June 10, 17, and 24 at the History Center, 615 Lindsay Street, Suite 100. This mini-course will examine our city’s many layers of human experience, including what happened, the ways Chattanooga’s story has been told, and new ways to tell it for the next generation. The Sunny D Camp will be held at the Blue Ridge Kiwanis Club Fairgrounds in Blue Ridge with and end of camp performance on June 27 & 28 at 7:00 p.m. on the main stage at the Blue Ridge Community Theater in Hampton Square.

Because Clifford the Big Red Dog is sooooo big, Creative Discovery Museum is having a contest to identify Chattanooga's biggest dog.

In celebration of the Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog exhibit, Creative Discovery Museum invites pets and their owners to celebrate summer with a dog parade, including contests and fun activities. It all happens at the Dog Days of Summer Dog Parade on June 28, from 9-10 a.m. on the Plaza outside the Museum.

Prizes will be given in four categories: biggest dog, smallest dog, best Clifford look alike, and funniest pet trick. Local artist Charlie Newton will be drawing pet portraits in pastels at no charge. Clifford the Big Red Dog will be on hand for photos, so people should be sure to bring their cameras.

"This is a chance for families to bring their dog out to play. They can bring their favorite pet, have a fun morning, and enjoy Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog," said Arts Manager Liza Blair.

Every family that brings a dog will receive one free adult admission and one free child admission. Dog Days of Summer is a free event. No registration is necessary, and it is not necessary to purchase a Museum admission. All dogs must be on a leash, and no dogs are allowed inside the Museum unless they are assistance dogs.

"We encourage people to come for the parade, then take their pets home and come back to the Museum," said Blair. "We want all the dogs to stay healthy, so we don't want to have a dog left in a hot car or tied to a tree while the people are inside." There will be plenty of water and dog treats for the contestants.

Now Open Summer Hours, June 21-August 10. Beginning Saturday, June 21 the Museum will be open every day (Monday through Sunday) from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Regular hours will resume on Monday, August 11.

We have the SRLS to thank for bringing this historic tour through Chattanooga and the Barking Legs. The Sun City Girls were a legendary band comprising the Bishop brothers and drummer Charles Gocher. With Gocher's death last year, the band's long run came to a close, and this show is the Bishops' sendoff to both their longtime bandmate and the band itself.

Beginning in May 2008 the founding and surviving members of Sun City Girls, Alan Bishop and Richard Bishop, are embarking on a tour of the US and Canada called The Brothers Unconnected: A tribute to Sun City Girls and Charles Gocher.

With this tour, Alan and Rick make good on their solemn vow to publicly honor Charlie, his memory, and his immense talent. Sun City Girls will no longer exist as a recording or performing entity and this tour also serves as a tribute to the legacy of the group.

Most dates will feature an opening 40 minute film of Charles Gocher's video works entitled The Handsome Stranger, which is equal parts demented, brilliant, hilarious, and inventive. This will be followed by two acoustic sets of Alan and Rick playing selected songs from the impossibly voluminous catalog of Sun City Girls material created during their 27 year history together, including several tracks written by and/or originally performed by Gocher.

This is the tour's only stop in Tennessee east of Memphis, and it is an event not to be missed.

CHATTANOOGA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM HOSTS SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

The rising cost of fuel has forced many families to reconsider their travel plans this summer. Due to these limitations, the Chattanooga African American Museum has decided to bring a piece of Washington D.C. to the Scenic City by hosting the Smithsonian travel exhibit, The Dancer Within, from June 23 through August 15.

The Dancer Within, a photographic display by nationally acclaimed photo-journalist, Rose Eichenbaum, captures the character and vitality of nearly fifty of the world’s greatest dancers including The American Ballerina, Cynthia Gregory; Tony Award winner and acclaimed actor and singer, Ben Vereen; the Spanish Dance Legend, Jose’ Greco; and the Goddess of Broadway, Chita Rivera. The Dancer Within Tour began in Ypsilanti, Michigan in April 2008 and Chattanooga is the second stop for the 10-city tour.

“We realize that the state of our economy is hindering many families from traveling long distances this summer and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to host the Smithsonian Institution’s The Dancer Within,”
said Rose Martin, Executive Director of the Chattanooga African American Museum. “Area families will be able to enjoy this renown Smithsonian exhibit right here in their backyard through August 15. We feel the museum is definitely a great alternative to the Smithsonian as it is family-friendly and budget-friendly as well.”
